Carpentry and joinery are not mutually exclusive, to be able to do one well you need to be able to do both well. There are times when fixing timber together with screws or nails is appropriate, but there are times when something more subtle is required and the ability to use traditional joinery methods is an essential element of a carpenters skill set.
